Your first day on a snowboard: what to rent, what to expect

Snowboarding has a steeper learning curve than skiing: day one is hard, day three is fun. Setting the expectation matters more than the equipment.

The biggest difference between snowboarding and skiing is day one. On skis the first day is slow but progressive; on a snowboard much of it is spent sitting down and standing back up. Knowing that in advance is the difference between giving up at dusk and coming back tomorrow.

Stance: regular or goofy?

Left foot forward is regular, right foot forward is goofy. Bindings are turned accordingly, which takes a minute at the counter. Two simple tests if you do not know which you are:

  • Have someone push you gently from behind. The foot you put forward to catch yourself goes in front.
  • Run and slide on a smooth floor. The foot you lead with gives the same answer.

Board length and boots

Stood on end, the board should reach between your chin and your nose; beginners take the shorter end of that. Rider weight matters more than height — every board states a recommended weight range, and being outside it spoils how the board responds.

The most common boot mistake is going a size up. Snowboard boots are soft and pack out during the day; on first fitting your toes should just brush the end. A loose boot swallows half of every movement you make on the board.

A realistic first-day plan

  1. 1Take a two-hour basics lesson in the morning. Falling and standing up is the most valuable part of it.
  2. 2Before lunch, work only on heelside sliding. Turning is a day-two subject.
  3. 3Do not push past two hours in the afternoon; falling on tired legs hurts more.
  4. 4Come back at the same time tomorrow. Snowboard progress consolidates overnight.

How long to rent for

One day is not enough for a first attempt; three days will very likely give you your first genuinely enjoyable run. Because the per-day unit falls as the duration grows, three days is proportionally cheaper than one. Change the duration in the booking step and the total recalculates instantly, so you can compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is snowboarding or skiing easier?
Skiing is clearly easier on day one; snowboarding's first day is mostly falling. After day three, snowboard progress accelerates. On a short trip skiing is more rewarding; on a longer one, snowboarding.
How do I know if I am regular or goofy?
Have someone push you gently from behind: the foot you put forward to catch yourself is your front foot. Left foot means regular, right foot means goofy.
How many hours should I snowboard on day one?
More than four is unproductive. Once the legs tire, learning stops and falls take more out of you. Two hours on each of two days beats four hours on one.
