The one number that matters on a sleeping bag: comfort rating

Sleeping bag listings quote three temperatures: comfort, limit and extreme. Only the first is useful in real life. The comfort rating is the lowest outside temperature at which an average person sleeps without getting cold. Limit and especially extreme describe survival scenarios; planning a trip around them means a cold night.

For summer camping in most of Türkiye a comfort rating of 5–10 °C is enough. In Cappadocia and the Anatolian plateaus, summer nights still drop below 5 °C; on the coast 10 °C is comfortable. Spring and autumn need a bag rated at 0 °C or below.

The mat under the bag matters as much as the bag. Most heat is lost to the ground; with an uninsulated mat even the best bag is cold. The R-value on a listing gives the insulation: 2 is enough for summer, 3–4 for three seasons.

Choosing a tent: the person count misleads

The number on a tent is how many people fit shoulder to shoulder — bags, boots and room to move are not counted. The practical rule: if two people want to be comfortable, rent a three-person tent. For solo camping, a two-person tent takes your kit inside and makes a rainy day survivable.

The second question is single or double wall. Double-wall tents let breath condense on the outer fly; in single-wall lightweight tents water collects on the inner surface by morning. On Türkiye's humid coast that difference is significant.

Why renting suits camping in particular

Bought camping gear is used a few weekends a year and stored for eleven months. Worse, on the first purchase you do not yet know which tent size or pack volume suits you — most of it gets replaced in the second season.

Renting solves both: gear matched to the place and season each time, and a purchase decision made after real use. In Pistrun the shop's equipment list, comfort ratings and what is included are stated on the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Which temperature rating should I look at?
The comfort rating. Limit and extreme describe survival, not comfortable sleep. Check the overnight low where you are going and pick a bag whose comfort rating is below it.
Does a two-person tent fit two people?
Yes, if you accept leaving bags outside. For two people who want to be comfortable a three-person tent is markedly better, and the rental difference is usually small.
Do rented tents arrive clean and complete?
The listing states the tent's parts (inner, fly, poles, pegs, bag). Checking that list at pickup beats discovering a missing peg at the campsite.
Is gas included with a camping stove?
Usually not — gas is a consumable and most shops sell it separately. The 'what's included' list on the listing says so explicitly.
