Why the price uncertainty on the beach ends

The familiar water-sports scenario: you see a sign on the beach, ask the price, hear an hourly rate, and then the buoyancy aid, the paddle or the fuel turns out to be extra. Hearing three different prices for the same kit in one season is not unusual.

SUP: the right kit for a first try

Paddleboarding is the fastest-growing water activity of recent years, for a good reason: in a calm bay most people are standing within half an hour. Two things to check when renting. First, board width: 32 inches and above is noticeably more stable and the right choice for beginners. A narrow race board means falling in, repeatedly, on a first attempt.

Second, buoyancy aid and leash. The leash stops the board blowing away from you and is a basic part of safety in open water. The listing states whether both are included; if not, add them.

One simple wind rule: do not go out on a SUP in an offshore wind blowing from the shore to the sea. Going out is easy, coming back is not. Mornings are usually the calmest window on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.

The rental standard for diving gear

Diving is where rental is most normal — even professional divers hire tanks and weights when travelling. The critical point is servicing: regulators and BCDs must have a maintenance record. Serious centres document this and say so on the listing.
