What waterproof ratings on ski clothing actually mean

Ski length is more layered than the one-line answer given at the rental counter. Height, weight and level work together.
The question at the rental desk is usually "how tall are you?" and a ski is handed over accordingly. That is a fine starting point but not the whole story: for two people of the same height, the right ski can differ by up to 10 cm depending on weight and level.
Ski length starts from your height and is then corrected for level and weight. A shorter ski turns easily and forgives at low speed. A longer ski holds a line at speed and floats in deep snow, but takes more force to turn.
| Level | Ski length | How it feels |
|---|---|---|
| First-timer / beginner | Height − 15 to 20 cm | Turns easily, forgives mistakes |
| Intermediate | Height − 10 to 15 cm | Balance of control and stability |
| Advanced | Height − 5 to 0 cm | Stable at speed, wide-arc turns |
| Freeride / deep snow | Height to height + 5 cm | Floats in soft snow |
A ski works by flexing under the weight on it. A heavier skier of the same height bends it more and can therefore take a ski 5–10 cm longer. Conversely, someone light for their height should drop a step below the table — otherwise the ski never flexes and the turn never forms.
Skis carry three numbers (tip, waist and tail width, in millimetres). The one that matters at a rental counter is the waist. A 70–80 mm waist changes edges quickly on piste and is ideal for learning. From 90 mm up the ski floats in deep snow but is slower edge to edge on hard piste. For piste skiing at Turkish resorts, 75–85 mm is the right band.

Your ski boot size is not your shoe size. Mondo point is the length of your foot in centimetres — and not knowing that shapes the whole day.
