Mondo boot size: what it is and how to measure it

Your ski boot size is not your shoe size. Mondo point is the length of your foot in centimetres — and not knowing that shapes the whole day.

Say "42" at a rental counter and you will not be handed a size 42 boot. Ski boots use the mondo point system: the length of your foot in centimetres, heel to longest toe.

Measuring your foot

  1. 1Take your shoes off and put on a ski sock — thickness changes the measurement.
  2. 2Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall.
  3. 3Mark the tip of your longest toe and measure to the wall in centimetres.
  4. 4Measure both feet and use the larger. A difference of up to half a size is normal.

How tight should it be?

A correctly fitted ski boot feels slightly tight on first wearing. Standing upright, your toes should just brush the front; press your knee forward and they should pull back. The heel should not lift when you flex forward.

A boot that feels comfortable in the shop is the boot that loses control on the slope. Steering passes from the ankle into the shell; any slack swallows part of every movement, and the ski responds late. That is the most common source of the beginner's complaint that "the skis aren't listening".

Flex: the second number

Boots also carry a flex rating — the stiffness of the shell. Rental boots usually sit between 60 and 90 flex, which is right for beginners and intermediates. High flex (100+) responds faster but tires the leg and reduces control if you do not have the strength for it.

  • Beginner: 60–80 flex, softer and more forgiving
  • Intermediate: 80–100 flex
  • Advanced: 100+ flex, fast response, demands leg strength

Wearing the boot for ten minutes and walking around the shop is the easiest way to catch a problem before it reaches the slope. A pressure point can be solved with a liner adjustment or half a size; on the mountain you have no such option.

Frequently asked questions

I wear a EU 42 — which mondo boot do I ask for?
Usually 27.0 or 27.5. Brand differences make that a starting point only; having your foot measured takes five minutes and settles it.
My rental boot feels tight — should I size up?
If there is a pressure point, yes. Otherwise "slightly tight" is correct: boots pack out through the day, and a loose boot directly compromises control.
Do thick socks make ski boots more comfortable?
No, the opposite. Thick socks fill the volume, restrict circulation and make your feet colder. A thin, knee-length synthetic or merino ski sock is right.
