Sleeping bag ratings: which of the three numbers to trust

Only one of the three temperatures on a sleeping bag label is useful in real life. The other two describe survival.

Sleeping bags are the most misread item in camping rental. A listing quotes three temperatures — comfort, limit and extreme — and planning a trip around the wrong one produces a cold night.

Three numbers, three scenarios

RatingWhat it meansWhen to use it
ComfortThe lowest outside temperature at which an average person sleeps without getting coldPlan around THIS one
LimitThe lower bound at which you can sleep curled upSleep quality drops; not a planning figure
ExtremeThe point at which hypothermia is held offA survival scenario, never a plan

Practical ratings for Türkiye

  • Aegean and Mediterranean coast, summer: 10 °C comfort is enough.
  • Central Anatolia and the plateaus, summer: 5 °C. Nights drop into single figures even in July.
  • Spring and autumn, anywhere: 0 °C comfort or below.
  • Winter camping: −5 °C or below, and an insulated mat is not optional.

The mat does half the work

A sleeping bag insulates by trapping air in its fill. Lying down crushes the fill beneath you, so it insulates almost nothing. That is why the mat's insulation is as decisive as the bag's rating.

Listings quote an R-value. Around 2 covers summer, 3–4 covers spring and autumn, 5 and above is winter territory. An uninsulated inflatable mat — an air mattress, effectively — does not stop the cold ground, and no bag compensates for that.

Down or synthetic?

Down insulates more for its weight and packs smaller. Wet, it loses most of that and takes a long time to dry. Synthetic fill is heavier and bulkier but keeps insulating to a degree when damp.

Rental bags are usually synthetic, for a good reason: they wash well and last longer through many users. On Türkiye's humid coast, synthetic is the better choice anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Which rating should I choose a bag by?
The comfort rating. Check the overnight low where you are going and pick a bag whose comfort rating sits below it. Limit and extreme are not planning figures.
Do I really need a mat?
Yes. Most heat is lost to the ground and the fill beneath you is crushed flat, so it insulates almost nothing. An uninsulated mat leaves you cold in the best bag.
Are rental sleeping bags hygienic?
Serious operators wash bags between uses and say so on the listing. A thin liner adds both a hygiene layer and a few degrees of warmth.
