Ski resorts in Türkiye: which one suits you?

Türkiye's ski resorts differ less in size than in character. Access, altitude and slope profile matter more than a piste count.

Choosing a Turkish ski resort is mostly a question of trade-offs between access, altitude and terrain. None of them are Alpine in scale, and comparing them on piste counts misses what actually shapes a trip.

Access first

Access is the variable most people underweight. Erciyes has one of the shortest airport-to-slope connections of any Turkish resort, which makes a genuine weekend trip possible. Kartepe is inside a two-hour drive of Istanbul, which makes a day trip possible. Sarıkamış, in the east, needs a flight and a plan — and that changes how you should handle equipment.

ResortBest forWatch out for
ErciyesWeekend trips, long season, high altitudeCold and wind at altitude
UludağCar-free access from Istanbul, dense rental supplyCrowds in school holidays
PalandökenLong, steep runs; intermediate and advancedSevere cold in January
KartepeDay trips, beginners, familiesLower altitude, shorter season
SarıkamışDry snow, forest runs, quietDistance; limited rental supply

Altitude decides the season

Resorts with a base above 2,000 m — Erciyes and Palandöken — hold snow longer and can run into April. Lower resorts have a shorter, more weather-dependent season and are worth checking before you set off.

Altitude also changes what you should rent. High and cold means a neck gaiter, quality gloves and a windproof shell matter more than a high waterproof rating; the risk at Erciyes and Palandöken in January is wind chill, not wet snow.

Terrain and your level

Palandöken's runs are longer and steeper than the Turkish average, which suits intermediates and above — and which argues for renting a class up from the beginner ski that would serve you elsewhere. Kartepe's shorter runs are an advantage for a first-timer. Sarıkamış cuts its runs through Scots pine forest, which is scenic and, practically, sheltered from wind.

A practical rule

If it is your first ski trip, prioritise access and gentle terrain: Kartepe or Uludağ. If you want a long season and a real weekend trip, Erciyes. If you already ski well, Palandöken. If you want something different from the rest of Türkiye, Sarıkamış.

Frequently asked questions

Which Turkish ski resort is best for beginners?
Kartepe and Uludağ, for short runs, learning areas and easy access. Palandöken has beginner runs but its overall character suits intermediate and advanced skiers.
Which resort has the longest season?
The high-altitude ones. Erciyes and Palandöken, with bases above 2,000 m, hold snow longest and can run into April in good years.
Where should I book equipment in advance?
Everywhere during school holidays, and at Sarıkamış in general — the resort is small, rental supply is limited, and reaching an alternative shop is not easy.
